Late Foul Shots Lift Northeastern Past Tigers, 58-56

BOSTON, Mass. - Deanna Kerkhof sank a pair of free throws with four tenths of a second remaining to lift Northeastern to a 58-56 win over the Tigers on Thursday night. The Tigers (7-12, 1-7 CAA) got a game-high 15 points from Simona Petronyte including the game-tying basket with 25 seconds remaining.

Trailing 26-22 coming out of the half, the Tigers saw Northeastern score the first nine points of the stanza to lead 31-22 with 16:38 to play. The Tigers cut the deficit to five as Dovile Miliauskaite connected on a pair from the charity stripe with 13:52 to play. Northeastern would sandwich a pair of triples around a Jessica Haywood lay-up and led 37-28 with 12:25 remaining. Northeastern would score eight of the next 14 points in the game to grab a 45-34 advantage with eight minutes to play. That was Northeastern's largest lead of the game.

Miliauskaite connected on both shots from the foul line at 7:18 to jump start an 11-2 run by the Tigers. That run pulled the Tigers to within two, at 47-45 with 3:34 to play. That run included four points from Petronyte and some strong defensive stands by the Tigers and Charmonique Watt. After Christine Huber hit one of two from the line, Miliauskaite did the same on the Tigers' end to make it a 48-46 game with 3:27 to go. Northeastern scored eight of the next ten to push its lead to 56-48 with 51 seconds to go. Krystal Parnell scored five unanswered points in the span of 10 seconds to make it a 56-53 game with 41 remaining. The Tigers then forced a Northeastern turnover and Petronyte connected on her third triple of the game to tie the score at 56-56 with 26 seconds remaining.  After a miss on the offensive end, the Huskies were able to collect the rebound and get the foul call setting the stage for the end of the game.

The two teams battled closely early in the game and found themselves tied at 9-9 with 13:54 remaining in the first half. A Petronyte triple at 13:23 put the Tigers up 12-9. The two teams continued to swap baskets and a Huskie field goal at 8:57 tied the game at 15-15. Northeastern held a 20-17 lead with 6:56 remaining in the half but the Tigers got a free throw at 6:31 and a Petronyte bucket at 6:16 to tie the game back up. The Huskies got three straight buckets from Mia Mayberry to take a 26-20 lead with 35 seconds to go. Jaleesa Dryver hit the final bucket of the half with 19 seconds remaining and Northeastern took a 26-22 lead into the break.

Towson shot 36.7% from the floor and 69.6% from the free throw line. Northeastern shot 55% from the floor and 66.7% from the line in the game. Towson held a 29-27 edge on the boards in the game and scored 20 points off turnovers to aid the second half comeback.

Petronyte finished with 15 points and two assists in the game while Parnell added 12 points and seven assists. Miliauskaite led all players on the boards with nine while adding five points and two blocked shots. Dryver finished with seven points and six rebounds.

Kerkhof tied Petronyte for game-high honors with 15 points and three assists. Huber and Kashaia Cannon each had nine points and five rebounds in the game.

Towson returns home following tonight's action for its next game on Sunday, January 30. The Tigers will host James Madison in the Towson Center at 2 p.m.
