McKee Leads Tigers Past Hofstra, 3-2

TOWSON, Md. - Senior midfielder Courtney McKee scored two goals in the first half to lead the Tigers (6-7-0, 1-4-0) to their first Colonial Athletic Association win of the season, a 3-2 victory over Hofstra University (6-5-0, 2-3-0) at the Tiger Soccer Complex on Friday afternoon.

It marked the Tigers' first win over the Pride since October 24, 1997 when Towson earned a 3-0 victory over Hofstra. In addition, it marked the Tigers' first win since September 16, a 2-1 overtime victory at Campbell.

"We are really pleased with the way we played today," Towson Coach Greg Paynter said. "It's quite an accomplishment to beat a quality opponent like Hofstra, especially after the adversity we have dealt with over the last couple of weeks.

"I thought we came out and battled just as hard as Hofstra did today," Paynter added. "Fortunately, we were able to come out on top and get the win."

The Pride took a quick 1-0 lead in the fourth minute when freshman Sam Scolarici scored her second goal of the season on a 19-yard shot from the left side.

"We have been giving up goals early throughout the season," Paynter said. "But, I knew our players were going to respond. Obviously, it's not the way we wanted to start, but we were able to answer. Being on the road the last three weeks has given our team a lot of mental challenges, but the players wanted to be here and play well today."

But, the Tigers answered with two goals in less than two minutes to gain a 2-1 advantage. After McKee converted a crossing pass from junior forward Cheyenne Skidmore in the ninth minute to tie the game, she scored a similar goal in the 11th minute off another Skidmore assist for a 2-1 edge.

Just over seven minutes into the second half, the Tigers upped their advantage to 3-1 when freshman midfielder Katlyn Axenfeld scored the first goal of her college career after passes from Skidmore and sophomore forward Emily Banes.

With 11:56 remaining, senior forward Laura Greene trimmed the Pride's deficit to 3-2 with her 12th goal of the season off an assist from senior midfielder Courtney Breen.

However, senior goalkeeper Jocelyn Papciak made two saves in the final six minutes to preserve the Tigers' lead.

While McKee led the Tigers with the first multi-goal game of her career, Skidmore added a career-high three assists. Papciak, who entered the game as the CAA leader in saves, stopped eight Hofstra shots as the Pride held a 14-5 advantage in shots over Towson.

"Courtney and Jocelyn are both seniors and at this point in the season when things may not be going as well as you might like, you need players like them to step up and try to change things around," Paynter said. "I am really thrilled that our seniors were able to get a win over Hofstra."

Sophomore goalkeeper Emily Morphitis made one save for the Pride, which dropped its second straight game.

The Tigers will wrap up their three-game homestand on Sunday afternoon when they host Northeastern University in a CAA game at 1 p.m. Meanwhile, the Pride will travel to George Mason on Sunday afternoon.
