TOWSON, Md. - A 16-0 run early in the first half allowed the Tigers to open up a lead en route to a 64-50 victory over Canisius in the home opener. The Tigers (2-1) had three players score in double figures led by redshirt sophomore forward Nyree Williams' 13 points and 15 rebounds.

"We're happy to get a win especially in the home opener," said Coach Joe Mathews. "We did well on the glass today but we need to continue to be tenacious on the glass."

After Canisius (0-2) scored the first basket of the game, the Tigers scored 16 unanswered points and led 16-2 with 10:04 to play in the first half. Redshirt senior guard Meredith Kennedy and senior guard Krystal Parnell had five points apiece for the Tigers during that stretch. The Golden Griffins would use a 7-2 run of their own to make it an 18-9 game with 6:29 to play in the half. The Tigers would score 13 of the final 18 points in the half to take a 31-14 lead at the break. Williams had four points during that run.

Towson shot 42.3% from the floor in the first half, including three three-pointers. Canisius shot 19.4% from the floor in the first half and made just 2-of-15 three-point attempts. The Tigers held a 30-14 advantage on the boards in the first 20 minutes.

The two squads traded baskets early in the second half as a pair of free throws from Williams at 15:34 made it a 37-20 game. A jumper from Kennedy at 10:56 gave the home team a 42-29 lead. The two teams continued to battle as redshirt senior guard Sheree Ledbetter converted a three-point play at 7:25 to make the Tiger advantage 51-36. Freshman guard Destiny Shearin hit a bucket at 3:40 and the Tigers led 56-40. Canisius would then use a 10-3 to pull to within nine at 59-50 with 55 seconds to play. The Tigers went 5-for-6 from the foul line in the final 50 seconds to seal the victory.

The Tigers shot 34.8% from the floor in the second half and finished the game shooting 38.8%. Towson went 17-for-21 from the foul line in the second half and finished the game shooting 74.2% from the line. Canisius shot 35.5% from the floor in the second half and 27.4% for the game. The Golden Griffins shot 83.3% from the line in the second half and 66.7% for the game.

Williams had her second "double-double" in three games this season and contributed two blocks and two steals. Ledbetter finished with 13 points, including a 9-for-9 performance from the line and eight rebounds. Kennedy contributed 12 points, two assists and two steals.

Jen Morabito led the Golden Griffins with 12 points while Ashley Durham contributed nine points and four assists.

The Tigers continue their home stand when they host Mt. St. Mary's on Tuesday, Nov. 22 at 7 p.m. in the Towson Center.
