Towson Earns First CAA Victory Since 2007

TOWSON, Md. – Towson wrapped a two day POD meet at Burdick Pool and earned the team's first Colonial Athletic Association victory since 2007 after the Tigers (2-2, 1-2 CAA) defeated the Delaware Blue Hens 184-167 Sunday. Towson had not won a CAA dual meet since Jan. 6, 2007, when the team defeated Delaware 153-147.

Also competing in the meet was the UNC Wilmington Seahawks. They defeated Towson 196-145 while also defeating Delaware 245.50-105.50.

Towson clinched the win over Delaware in the final event of the meet, the 400-yard freestyle relay. Needing at least a second place finish, the relay team of Matt Collingwood, Sam Wilgus, Jon Burr and Zac Jelinek recorded a 3:08.65 time to finish in second place and earn the victory over Delaware.

The team received excellent performances from Andy Disco and Collingwood, both freshmen. Disco was strong for the second consecutive meet and won the 200 and 400-yard individual medley. He also posted a pair of top five finishes in two relay events.

Collingwood was victorious in the 1,650-yard freestyle event with a time of 16:13.96 and also finished fourth in two other events, including the 200-yard freestyle. In that event, the Tigers had three of the top four finishers. Jelinek won the event, while Zack Stone finished in second.

Alex Cohen was also strong in the diving portion of the meet for Towson, finishing second in both the one and three-meter dives.

“I'm extremely proud of them,” Towson Coach Pat Mead said. “It feels great. Delaware and UNC Wilmington are great programs. To win swimming as hard and as tough as we did and in this fashion is special.”

Towson will return to the pool when the team takes on George Washington University in a nonconference road meet. It will begin at 1:00 p.m.
