MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The Tigers split their action on day two at the CofC Cougar Classic. Towson (2-2) earned a 5-1 win over Canisius in its opening action of the day. Morehead State posted a 6-5 victory over the Tigers in the nightcap.
"It was good to get a win in the first game today," said Coach Lisa Costello. "We got some good production from people like Rachel Miller and Katie Lingmai and were able to take advantage of some mistakes by the other team. The second game we made some mistakes and we need to correct them moving forward."
Against Canisius (2-2), the Tigers jumped on the board early with three runs in the top of the first. Miller reached on an infield single and stole second. Miller would score on Andrea Stevenson's doubled to right center. Stevenson scored as Lindsey Kent singled and there was a throwing error on the play. Kent later scored in the inning on an RBI groundout by Courtney Wittner.
The Tigers would add to their lead in the top of the seventh as Stevenson's RBI single drove in Delanie Dunham. Miller also scored in the inning as she and Stevenson pulled off a double steal with Miller taking home.
Canisius would reach the Tigers and starter Lingmai for a single run in the bottom of the seventh but that was it.
Lingmai earned her second win of the season with another complete game performance. She gave up one earned run on six hits while striking out three. Amanda Baun took the loss for Canisius after giving up three runs on five hits in six innings.
Stevenson was 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs in the game. Miller went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two stolen bases. No player for Canisius had more than one hit in the game.
In the second game, both Morehead State and the Tigers each tallied a single run in the first inning. Morehead State took a 3-1 lead in the game as Stephanie Etter and Rebecca Butler each drove in a run in the top of the third inning.
Towson took the lead back in the bottom of the third. Sammi DiPompo reached on a base hit and scored when the Eagles committed an error on Wittner's sacrifice bunt. Kent had an RBI double to score Wittner and came around to score on Erika Stasch's base knock.
Morehead State took the lead back with a pair of runs in the fourth inning. The Eagles would add a run in the top of the sixth to lead 6-4.
Towson had one more chance in the game in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs and two runners on, Brianna Jones had an RBI single. Morehead State was able to get the final out and leave the tying run on second base.
Ashley Imperial earned the win for Morehead State after giving up five runs, three of which were earned in the complete game performance. Dominique Ortega took the loss for the Tigers in relief. She allowed three runs, one of which was earned in four innings. Paige Martin started the game and gave up three runs on six hits in three innings.
Miller finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI for the Tigers while Jones had a hit and two RBIs. DiPompo added a hit and two runs scored. Sam Woodall led Morehead State with three hits and three runs scored.
Towson wraps up play at the College of Charleston Cougar Classic when they face the host Cougars at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
