Kacy Catanzaro Named As ECAC Specialist of Week

CENTREVILLE, Mass. - Junior gymnast Kacy Catanzaro of the Tigers has been selected as the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division I Specialist of the Week, it has been announced by ECAC officials.

A first team All-ECAC selection on vault the last two seasons, Catanzaro was named as ECAC Gymnast of the Week last February. Two years ago, she earned an ECAC Rookie of the Week award.

Catanzaro is the second Tiger gymnast to earn the ECAC Specialist of the Week award. Junior co-captain Avis Hixon was honored as the award winner the last two weeks.

Normally a top performer as an all-around, Catanzaro has been relegated to competing on the uneven bars and the balance beam the last two weeks.

Last week, she led the six-time defending ECAC champion Tigers to a first place finish at the Ken Anderson Memorial Invitational Meet at Temple University.

In the meet at Temple, Catanzaro finished first on the uneven bars with a 9.775 score as she barely missed tying her career high (9.80). With a 9.656 average, she is the top performer on uneven bars in the ECAC.

On the balance beam, she tied for second place with a 9.575 score. On the season, she is averaging 9.60 on beam.

"Kacy has proven to be a solid competitor season," says Vicki Chliszczyk, the Tigers' first-year head coach.  "She is the type of gymnast whom you can count on in any situation.  Unfortunately, she has been limited by an ankle injury and has only been able to compete in two events the last couple meets.

"She had a great meet at Temple," she added. "Kacy came up with solid routines on bars and beam, knowing that we had no room for error due to falls earlier in the lineup.  We will continue to count on Kacy's consistency as we move forward through the season."

Now 7-1 on the season, the Tigers return to action this weekend when they travel to Cornell University to face the Big Red and Ithaca College in the Cornell Invitational at 1:00 p.m.
