TOWSON, Md. - Lindsey Kent scored with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Tigers to a 6-5 win over Marist on Tuesday afternoon. Towson (10-12) won its second straight as Andrea Stevenson and Erika Stasch hit home runs.
"It's good to get the win today," said Coach Lisa Costello. "We took advantage of some mistakes by the other team and I'm thrilled to see Andrea and Erika get the big hits."
The Tigers jumped on the board early as Stevenson drove a ball over the fence in right center with one out in the bottom of the first. For the junior, it was her first career home run.
Marist tied the game in the top of the fourth as Danielle Koltz's single to right field scored Haley Birnbaum with no outs. Tiger starter Dominique Ortega was able to work out of the jam, using a fly out and a line drive double play to strand runners on second and third in the frame. The Red Foxes took the lead with a single run in the top of the fifth.
Towson plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 4-2 game in favor of the home team. The Tigers used a single, a Marist error and a walk to load the bases with no outs. Sammi DiPompo then singled to right field to plate two of the runs. After the Tigers reloaded the bases on another error, Courtney Wittner worked a walk to force in the third run.
The Tigers would add to their lead in the sixth as Stasch drilled an opposite field home run down the right field line.
Marist would tie the game with three runs in the top of the seventh. With one out, the Red Foxes used three straight singles to load the bases and force a pitching change by the Tigers. Katie Lingmai entered and after a hard fought at-bat that went 10 plus pitches, surrendered a walk to Birnbaum to force in a run. Nicole DiVirgilio had a double to right field to score the other two runs. After the double, Lingmai got a pair of strikeouts to get out of the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, Kent worked a two-out walk. Brianna Jones then reached on an error by Marist that allowed Kent to score.
Lingmai earned the win in relief for the Tigers as she went 0.2 innings and allowed one hit while striking out two. Ortega finished with five runs on 11 hits in 6.1 innings of work. Emily Osterhaus took the loss for Marist after giving up six runs, three of which were earned on eight hits.
Stevenson, Stasch and DiPompo all finished with two hits apiece to lead the Tigers. Stevenson had two runs scored and an RBI while Stasch had the same. DiPompo added two RBIs. DiVirgillio led Marist with three hits and two RBIs in the game.
The Tigers are back in action on Friday, March 18 when they head out west. Towson will face Illinois-Chicago and Santa-Clara as part of the Sacramento State Capital Classic.
