TOWSON, Md. -The Tigers turned a triple play in the top of the seventh but it was not enough as they fell to Saint Joseph's, 5-1 on Wednesday afternoon. Sammi DiPompo had a pair of hits for the Tigers (18-21).
"We did not do a good job of taking care of the ball today," said Coach Lisa Costello. "We need to work on that and not giving opponents opportunities."
The Hawks (25-13) struck first with three runs in the top of the third inning. St. Joesph's had runners on second and third with one out with Bernadette Moran at the plate. A single and a Tiger error allowed both runs to score. Monica Aguilar would add a double in the frame to plate Moran and give the visitors a 3-0 lead.
The Hawks would add to their lead in the sixth as a Tiger error allowed pinch-runner Christine Bednar to score and make it a 4-0 game.
The Tigers got that run back in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out in the inning, the Tigers got a pair of singles and a walk to Andrea Stevenson. Lindsey Kent then hit into a fielder's choice but an error by the Hawks' catcher on the play allowed DiPompo to score.
The Hawks loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the seventh. Aguilar then hit a ball that third baseman, Bina Abbott fielded and threw home on the play. After getting the out at the plate, the Tigers threw to first getting Aguilar. While the Tigers were getting the out at first, Laura Cardone scored but Towson was able to get Moran, who was trying to go first to third for the final out on the play. It is believed to be the first triple play in program history.
