WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Hoping to continue the success they had during the non-conference season, the Tigers (5-4-0, 0-1-0) were unable to overcome a strong first half performance by William & Mary (6-1-2, 1-0-0) as the Tribe scored four first half goals en route to a 5-0 victory at the Warhill Sports Complex on Friday night.
It marked the first time this year that the Tigers have failed to score a goal. Meanwhile, William & Mary earned its second straight victory.
The Tribe needed just five minutes to take a 1-0 lead when Dani Rutter scored off an assist from Cortlyn Bristol. Just over 20 minutes later, William & Mary upped the advantage to 2-0 when freshman Emory Camper tallied her sixth goal of the season by scoring off a pass from Anna Madden.
With 5:03 left in the first half, Erin Liberatore extended the Tribe's cushion to 3-0 when she scored her second goal of the season off passes from Madden and Rutter.
Mallory Schaffer gave William & Mary a 4-0 lead with just over three minutes remaining in the first half with her fifth goal of the season off a feed from Rutter.
Schaffer and Rutter teamed up for a second time in the 68th minute when Schaffer scored her sixth goal of the year.
Rutter led the Tribe to the victory with a goal and three assists while Schaffer scored a pair of markers. Junior goalkeeper Katherine Yount recorded four saves en route to her CAA-leading fifth shutout of the season.
Senior goalkeeper Jocelyn Papciak made two saves in a losing effort for the Tigers in 78 minutes while freshman goalkeeper Erin Palmer made one save in the final 12 minutes.
The Tribe outshot Towson by an 18-7 margin and had a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Tigers will continue their five-game road trip on Sunday afternoon when they visit Old Dominion at 1 p.m.
