Tigers Earn Split on Day One of 49er Invitational

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Three runs in the top of the sixth allowed the Tigers to claim a come from behind win over Morgan State at the 49er Invitational. The win over the Bears gave the Tigers (2-4) a split of their day one action in Charlotte, N.C. after falling 7-4 to Charlotte in the opener.

“I thought we continued to fight and battle in the second game today,” said Coach Lisa Costello. “The first game, our offense was limited to one big inning but in the second game we kept working.”

Tied at 1-1 against the Bears, the Tigers used two runs in the top of the third to take a 3-1 advantage. The big blow for the Tigers during the inning was senior catcher Courtney Wittner's RBI double.

Morgan State used two runs in the fourth and another in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-3 advantage over the Tigers. Towson took the lead back in the top of the sixth as the Tigers had runners on second and third with two outs. Senior first baseman Andrea Stevenson doubled to right center to drive in both runners. Senior right fielder Brianna Jones then tripled down the right field line to score Stevenson.

After Morgan State made it a 6-5 game with a run in the bottom of the sixth, the Tigers added an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Junior third baseman Bina Abbott doubled down the line to score pinch-runner junior Stevie Patnode.

Freshman pitcher Missy McCormick earned her first career victory while surrendering four runs on seven hits in five innings. Senior pitcher Dominique Ortega went the final two innings in the circle and gave up one run on two hits to get credit for the save. Amber Bachman took the loss for Morgan State after giving up six runs in 5.2 innings of work.

Stevenson and Jones had three hits each and two RBIs in the game. Freshman shortstop Hailey Balk had two hits and three runs scored in the game.

“We got some big hits from our key contributors today and having Hailey get going after missing last weekend was a lift,” added Costello.

Against Charlotte, the Tigers found themselves down early as the 49ers scored a first inning run. The Tigers responded with four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-1 advantage. Junior catcher Jillian Donnelly had an RBI single before junior left fielder Kelli Lyons tripled to right field to drive in three runs.

Charlotte tied the game in the top of the sixth as two Tiger errors led to three unearned runs. The 49ers would add three more runs in the top of the seventh on three RBI singles to take a 7-4 lead in the game. That margin would prove to be the final margin of victory.

Lexi Betancourt earned the win the circle after giving up four runs on eight hits in seven innings. Junior pitcher Katie Lingmai took the loss after giving up six runs on five hits in 6.1 innings of work. Ortega allowed one run while getting the final two outs for the Tigers.

Stevenson, Jones and Donnelly led the Tigers with two hits apiece in the game. Bri Gwaltney had three hits and two RBIs, including the game-winner.

The tournament continues on Saturday, Feb. 25 as the Tigers face Boston College at 10 a.m. The Tigers will then play a second game at either 2 or 4 p.m. depending on the team seeding after the morning's games.
