Freshmen Power Tigers Past Morgan State 12-3

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Freshman Macie McGeehan hit her first career home run in the fifth inning, and classmate Hailey Balk had two runs batted in and two runs scored to lead the Tigers (3-6, 0-0 CAA) past the Morgan State Bears 12-3 Sunday in six innings at the final game of the 49er Invitational.

McGeehan, who batted in the designated player spot Sunday, was a perfect 4-for-4 with the homer and three runs scored in the best game of her young career. Her fifth inning home run put the Tigers ahead 7-3.

Morgan State got off to a fast start against Towson pitcher Dominique Ortega, who labored through the first inning and gave up three runs, including a home run to Tiffany Rubin.

However, from there the senior Ortega was in complete command of the game, as she allowed just three hits over the final five innings to earn the victory. She is now 1-3 this season.

The Tigers banged out 13 hits in the win and had three other players in addition to McGeehan collect at least two hits, including third baseman Delanie Dunham, right fielder Brianna Jones and first baseman Andrea Stevenson.

Towson scored five runs in the sixth to put the game away after getting the first three batters on base in the inning. Mickelle Oslin had a two-run single that scored Dunham and Stevie Patnode to complete the scoring.

Jones had a pair of run scoring singles that plated Balk in the first and second inning. Jones is enjoying a fast start to the season, batting .448 in the first nine games.

The Tigers will have their home opener Wednesday against UMBC beginning at 2 p.m.
