TOWSON, Md. – Senior outfielder Erika Stasch hit a dramatic game-tying solo home run in the seventh inning and classmate Brianna Jones hit a walk-off home run
in the 12th inning as the Tigers came from behind to edge Delaware, 4-3, in the third and final game of the teams' three-game series on Sunday at the Tiger Softball Complex.
The victory enabled the Tigers to win the three-game Colonial Athletic Association series after the Tigers won the series opener on Saturday, 1-0. The Blue Hens (5-25-1, 1-2 CAA) won the middle game of the series, 5-4.
“Every CAA series is going to be like
this,” Towson Coach Lisa Costello
said. “You are going to have to scrap until the last out, no matter who you
play. We're happy to win the series. The kids came up in the clutch when we
needed them to.”
The dramatic victory capped a tight three-game
series in which every game was decided by one run.
Facing Delaware pitcher Chenxi Jiao to lead off the bottom of
the 12th inning, Jones hit her fifth home run of the season over the left field fence, ending the dramatic win.
Taking the circle for the Tigers in the
second game was ace Katie Lingmai,
who threw all 12 innings in the win and struck out 12 batters. With 434 career
strikeouts, the junior tied former Tiger Jessica
Wides for the most career strikeouts in school history. Wides pitched for
Towson from 2002-05.
Delaware's Gina Knutson hit a three-run home run in the top of the third to
give Delaware a 3-0 lead.
However, Jillian Donnelly hit a two-run single in the bottom of the inning, giving Towson its
first runs of the game and making the score 3-2 in favor of Delaware.
In the first game Sunday, Delaware
pounded out 10 hits and grabbed an early 2-0 lead when Marisa Newman hit a two-run home run in the second inning. Nine
different Blue Hens had hits in the win.
The Tigers took a 4-2 lead in the
fourth inning when Kelli Lyons'
triple scored Haley Stueckler and Macie McGeehan. Stueckler had a
productive series against the Blue Hens in the three games, recording three
total hits, three runs, two doubles and two walks.
However, Delaware answered with three
runs in the fifth inning to take the 5-4 lead.
Towson will travel to Georgetown
Tuesday for a 3 p.m. game with the Hoyas.
