TOWSON, Md. – Jessica Warner hit two home runs and Katie Ferguson threw a three hit
shutout to lead the UMBC Retrievers (6-7) to a 6-0 victory over the Tigers
(6-8) Thursday afternoon at the Tiger Softball Complex.
Warner,
a sophomore third baseman, hit a pair of two-run homers in the third and fifth
innings off of Towson starting pitcher Dominique Ortega, who faced three batters in the fifth. Freshman Missy McCormick threw well in relief for Towson, throwing three
perfect innings and striking out six batters.
“We
have to get to work at practice,” Towson Head Coach Lisa Costello said. “We have to string hits together. Katie Ferguson threw a nice game, but
we didn't adjust at the plate. We will be focusing a lot on offensive work.”
Erika Stasch went 2-for-3
at the plate for the Tigers, singling to left field in the second and fourth
innings. Stasch now has a .340 batting average this season and a team-best .723
slugging percentage. Third baseman Delanie Dunham finished the game 1-for-3 at the plate for Towson.
Ferguson
threw all seven innings for the Retrievers and walked only two batters. She is
now 3-4 this season after earning the win.
Towson will host a three-game series with Columbia beginning Saturday, March 10 at noon.
