TOWSON, Md. – Freshmen Macie McGeehan
and Hailey Balk combined for eight
hits, nine runs batted in and seven runs scored to lead the Tigers (18-21, 3-6
CAA) to a doubleheader sweep of the Howard Bison (5-24) Wednesday at the Tiger
Softball Complex. The Tigers won game one by a score of 11-1 and game two in
shutout fashion, 10-0.
McGeehan hit a home run and a three-run
triple in game one to record a season-high six runs batted in, while Balk
finished the game a perfect 4-for-4 and at the plate and scored a pair of runs
to lead the Towson offense. Andrea Stevenson also hit a home run and a triple
in the win, finishing 2-for-4 with three runs batted in.
Towson junior pitcher Katie Lingmai had an outstanding performance in game one, yielding
just a solo-home run to Howard's Rebecca
Kirschner in the fourth inning. It was the only hit Lingmai allowed in six
innings. She struck out 13 batters, which ties a career-high, and began the
game by fanning the first seven batters. She improved to 11-8 this season.
In game two, Stevenson led off the game
with another home run, and Erika Stasch
hit a two-run double that scored a third run on an error, to give the Tigers an
early 5-0 advantage after the first inning against Howard pitcher Samantha Gatson.
From there, Towson pitcher Missy McCormick would shut down the
Bison and throw four shutout innings of three-hit ball. McCormick gave way to
senior Paige Martin, who was making
her season debut, in the fifth inning. Martin struck out two batters in a
perfect inning to end the game.
Balk collected two more hits in the second
game and now six multi-hit games during her current nine-game hit streak. She
is batting a team-high .370 this season.
Towson returns to the Tiger Softball
Complex Saturday for a Colonial Athletic Association series with the UNC
Wilmington Seahawks, beginning with a doubleheader at 12 p.m.
