TOWSON, Md. – A four-run sixth inning helped the Tigers rally from a 3-2 deficit
and hold on for a 6-5 win over the UNC Wilmington Seahawks (7-33, 2-9 CAA) in
the second game of a doubleheader Saturday at the Tiger Softball Complex. The
win for the Tigers came after Towson (19-22, 4-7 CAA) fell to the Seahawks in
the first game by a 3-0 score.
Brianna Jones began the game-two comeback by hitting
a game-tying double that allowed pinch-runner Stevie Patnode, on second base after Hailey Balk led off the inning with a double of her own, to score
and tie the game at 3-3. Macie McGeehan
singled and Erika Stasch walked to
load the bases for catcher Jillian Donnelly. She then reached base on a fielder's choice in which UNC
Wilmington was unable to record an out and allowed two Towson runs to score,
making it a 5-3 Towson advantage. The Tigers would add their sixth run on a
sacrifice fly.
However, the Seahawks did not give up
in the seventh inning despite trailing 6-3. A pinch double by Camry Wagner and a single by Ashley Shingleton brought up shortstop Lauryn Buckworth, who had been a
perfect 3-for-3 at the plate. Buckworth got her fourth hit of the game when she
lined a double that scored Wagner and Shingleton, bringing the score to 6-5.
The game ended when Stasch, Towson's
senior centerfielder, threw out pinch runner Olivia Poplin at the plate for the final out of the seventh inning
after a single by Stacey Pinno,
preserving a Towson victory.
Towson freshman Missy McCormick pitched all seven innings for the Tigers in the win
and earned her fifth victory of the season.
In the second game, Kristen Jernigan
hit a two-run double in the sixth inning to increase the UNC Wilmington lead to
3-0. That was all run support Seahawks pitcher Amanda Davenport would need, as
she threw her third shutout of the season and improved her record to 6-16 with
the complete game. Davenport yielded just four hits and no walks while striking
out four batters.
Towson junior Katie Lingmai fell to 11-9 with the loss despite allowing only five
hits and three runs while also throwing a complete game. She struck out 10
batters, the fifth time this season she posted double digit strikeouts.
Balk had two hits in both game one and
game two, increasing her hitting streak to 11 straight games. She also has at
least two hits in six straight contests and is batting .386 this season, which
leads the Colonial Athletic Association.
The Tigers and Seahawks will wrap up
their series Sunday with a game that begins at 1 p.m. at the Tiger Softball
Complex.
