TOWSON, Md. – The No. 8 University of Maryland women's basketball team used an 12-0 run late in the first half to pull away from the Towson University women's basketball team and post a 90-53 win in SECU Arena on Saturday night. Senior guard Tanisha McTiller had a season-high 25 points to lead the Tigers.

“Tough game playing against one of the top teams in the University of Maryland,” said Towson coach Niki Reid Geckeler. “We have a lot of positives we can take from this game and build on.”

The Tigers and Terps battled hard and tight for most of the first half. Maryland jumped out to a 9-3 lead with 16:18 to play as Laurin Mincy connected on a three-pointer. Towson scored eight of the next 10 points to tie the game at 11-11 with 13:22 remaining in the half. Four of the Tigers' eight points during that stretch belonged to McTiller. Tierney Pfirman hit one-for-two from the foul line at 11:50 and Maryland led 16-11. Towson used a 6-2 run to make it an 18-17 game with 9:15 left in the half. Maryland pushed its lead back to five before the Tigers scored four straight points to make it a 22-21 game with 6:46 to play in the half. That was as close as the Tigers would get the rest of the way. Maryland closed the first half on a 24-9 run to take a 46-30 lead at the half.

Maryland (4-1) shot 48.5% to the Tigers' (1-4) 42.3% in the first half. The Terps held a 23-13 edge in the rebounding battle.

The Tigers and Terps traded points early in the second half as a McTiller lay-up at 17:44 made it a 51-37 game. Maryland scored 15 of the game's next 19 points to push its lead to 66-41 with 12:16 to play. The two teams continued to battle but the Terps' lead did not fall below 22 the rest of the way. McTiller hit a pair of free throws with 1:22 to play to make the final score 90-53.

Maryland shot an impressive 72% from the field in the second half and 58.6% for the game. The Tigers shot 24.1% in the second half and 32.7% for the game. The Terps won the rebounding battle 46-21.

McTiller added five rebounds, an assist and a steal to her team-leading points production. Sophomore guard Dominique Johnson contributed 11 points and five assists.

Alyssa Thomas led five Maryland players in double figures with 15 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Mincy added 14 points and seven rebounds.

Towson is back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 26 when it hosts UMBC at 5 p.m.
