Tigers Have Three-Game Winning Streak Snapped

NACOGDOCHES, Texas. – The Towson men's basketball team couldn't hold on to an eight point second half lead as the Tigers had their three-game winning streak snapped with a 79-69 setback at Stephen F. Austin on the first day of the Lumberjack Etech Classic on Friday.

Stephen F. Austin improves to 7-2 on the year while picking up its 21st straight victory at home. Towson falls to 6-3 on the year with all three losses coming on the road.

Seniors Jerrelle Benimon and Rafriel Guthrie led the Tigers with 16 points each, but both fouled out in the second half. Benimon shot 6-for-11 from the field and added six rebounds and four assists to his stat line. Guthrie shot 4-for-5 from the field and 7-for-8 from the free throw line.

Towson shot 55 percent as a team but was doomed by 20 turnovers that Stephen F. Austin turned into 25 points.

Towson trailed by as many as 11 points early in the first half before picking up its defensive efforts. The Tigers held the Lumberjacks without a field goal for 5:04 and Guthrie scored the first seven points of a 14-0 Towson run that gave the visitors a 30-26 lead at the 6:06 mark of the first half.

The Tigers made 11 of their first 12 shots en route to shooting 72.2 percent in the first half. Stephen F. Austin countered with the hot shooting of sophomore guard Thomas Walkup to take a 40-38 lead into the intermission. Walkup, who entered the game averaging 8.6 points per game, tallied 16 of his game-high 20 points in the opening stanza.

Trailing 47-42 early in the second half, Towson used a 10-0 run to take a 54-49 lead with 11:48 remaining. The Tigers would lead by as many as eight points in the second half but the Lumberjacks used a 12-1 run to regain the lead, 65-60, with 4:10 left in the game.

Benimon fouled out with 3:35 remaining and Guthrie picked up his fifth foul less than a minute later. Towson wouldn't get to within seven after that duo left the game.

Senior Marcus Damas was also in double figures for the Tigers with 11 points to go along with three of the teams seven blocks. Sophomore Timajh Parker-Rivera tied his season-high with six points while grabbing a game-high nine rebounds.

Towson will take on Sam Houston State tomorrow in its final game of the Lumberjack E-Tech Classic. The Bearkats (6-3) defeated James Madison, 77-76, in the first game on Friday.
