COLLEGE PARK, Md. –
Facing three nationally-ranked teams at
the Comcast Center, the Tigers (4-7) turned in their best mark of the
season on the uneven bars but had a very hard time on the balance beam as the
Tigers finished fourth in a very competitive quad meet on Friday night.
No.
17 Maryland won the meet with a 195.150 team score while No. 27 North Carolina
State posted a 194.600 score. No. 29 New Hampshire placed third in the meet
with a 193.300 score. Towson finished fourth with a 192.250 score.
On
floor exercise, the Tigers turned in a solid performance with a 48.60 score. Freshman standout Katie Sassa led the Tigers with a career high 9.825 score to finish
seventh in the meet.
Freshman
Lydia Thompson led Towson to a
48.575 vault score. Thompson finished eighth in the meet with a 9.80 score on
vault while Sassa placed 12th
with a 9.775 score.
On
the uneven bars, the Tigers earned their highest team score of the season when
they earned a 48.325. Freshman Abby Griswold and sophomore Samantha Lutz
tied for eighth place on bars. Each of them had a 9.725 score.
However,
the Tigers struggled on beam once again and had a seasonal low 46.75 score. Junior
Alexa Davis placed fourth on beam with a 9.70 score while freshman Stephanie
Ward and Griswold each had a 9.55 score.
Competing
as an all-arounder, Griswold finished fourth in the meet with a 38.40 score.
Midway
through the meet, Towson was second behind Maryland. Entering the final rotation,
the meet was very close. Maryland led the field (145.675) while NC State had a
145.575. The Tigers were a very close third (145.500), just 0.175 points behind
Maryland. Towson also led New Hampshire.
However,
the Tigers finished on beam and fell behind.
“This
was a good experience for our team,” said Towson Coach Vicki Chliszczyk. “These are all teams in the EAGL and we are going
to be competing against teams like this in the immediate future.”
Sophomore
Stephanie Giameo led Maryland to its
first place finish by winning the all-around competition with a 39.20 score.
She also finished first on beam with a 9.875 score. Junior Katy Dodds of Maryland won the floor exercise with a 9.95 score
while Karen Tang of Maryland and Austyn Fobes of UNH tied for first on
bars (9.85).
Kelsey
Cofsky of Maryland finished second in the all-around (39.05), along with
Stephanie Ouellette of NC State.
The
Tigers return to action on Sunday, February 17 when they host the Shelli
Calloway Memorial Towson Invitational in the Towson Center at 1:00 p.m.
