TOWSON, Md. - A pair of late inning hits enabled the Towson softball team to win two games over the Hampton Pirates Wednesday afternoon, as the Tigers won the first game 6-4 and the second game 5-4.
Freshman catcher Caitie Barber started the heroics for the Tigers (13-10-1) in game one with a walk-off, two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Tigers an extra inning victory. Barber's homer came after sophomore Macie McGeehan singled up the middle to give the Tigers a runner on base in the eighth inning against Hampton pitcher Jailynn Jackson.
Jackson pitched the entire game for Hampton (11-16) and struck out 13 Tigers, but gave up six runs and eight hits, including the decisive and game-winning hit to Barber.
Sophomore Missy McCormick earned the win for Towson, pitching eight innings and allowing only four runs.
McGeehan, Barber and Hailey Balk each had two hits for Towson in game one. Balk also scored twice and drove in a run, while third baseman Delanie Dunham added a pair of RBI's.
In game two, the Tigers battled back from a 3-0 deficit to claim a 5-4 win. The rally started in the fifth inning when down 3-0, the Tigers scored four runs in the bottom of the frame.
Three straight Tiger batters singled to begin the inning and loaded the bases for Dunham, who promptly tripled to the right center field gap, clearing the bases to knot the score at 3-3.
Senior Jillian Donnelly then singled Dunham home, giving the Tigers a 4-3 lead after the fifth.
But the scoring would continue in the sixth, as a solo home run by Hampton's Shine Huwe, again tied the score at 4-4. Huwe was the first batter Tiger pitcher Katie Lingmai faced in the game after Lingmai relieved starting pitcher Ambar Hickman.
The Tigers would add the game-winning tally in the bottom of the sixth, when Bina Abbott singled and advanced to second base after an error in the Hampton outfield. A sacrifice bunt moved Abbott to third base and she was then brought home by junior outfielder Maureen Hepner to put the Tigers in front, 5-4.
Lingmai would earn the win after keeping Hampton scoreless in the seventh inning. It was the fifth victory of the year for the senior.
Hickman finished the game with five innings pitched, allowing just three runs.
Towson returns to the Tiger Softball Complex Thursday for a game against Ohio State at 2 p.m.
