GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Towson softball team continued its spring break road-trip
with a doubleheader at Furman on Tuesday, but fell in both games to the Paladins
8-2 in game one and 8-4 in game two.
The Tigers (14-14-1) started game one hot, as two walks and
an error loaded the bases for second baseman Macie McGeehan in the first inning. The sophomore hit a sharp line
drive to the left centerfield gap, bringing home Delanie Dunham and Kelli Lyons. McGeehan's double gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
The advantage suited Tiger starting pitcher Missy McCormick well in the early
going, as she gave up four hits and no runs in the first four innings, striking
out five batters.
The Paladins got their offense going in the fifth,
highlighted by a two-run home run by Ambree
Muller. The Paladins would add two more runs on a misplayed ball in the Tiger
infield, and took a 4-2 lead.
The Paladins would add four more runs in the sixth, lifting
the team to the opening victory. Lauren
Collier earned the win and improved to 6-6 this season.
In game two, the Tigers yet again got a fast lead over
Furman. In the top of the first, senior catcher Jillian Donnelly hit a single to right field, scoring Lyons and
putting Towson up 1-0.
But the Paladins would respond in the bottom of the inning,
when Taylor Jenkins hit a three-run
home run to give Furman a 3-1 lead.
The Tigers added a run on a passed ball in the second inning
and took a 4-3 lead over the Paladins in the third when Bina Abbott hit a go-ahead single that scored Dunham.
But Jenkins had quite a day at the plate, adding a two-run
triple in the bottom of the third as part of a four-run Furman inning and put
the Paladins on top for good by a 7-3 margin. Jenkins finished 2-for-4 with
five runs batted in, which tied the school record.
Towson concludes the spring break road-trip with a single
game at UNC Greensboro on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
