TOWSON, Md. – Junior righthander Nik Nowottnick and freshman righthanders Garrett Walther and Lee Lawler combined on a three-hit shutout to lead Towson University (12-7) to a 2-0 victory over UMBC (4-9) in a non-conference game at John B. Schuerholz Park on Wednesday afternoon.

Nowotttnick, who earned his second win of the season, pitched four shutout innings and allowed two hits with five walks and three strikeouts. Walther threw four hitless innings as he walked one and struck out five. Lawler, who picked up his first career save, pitched a scoreless ninth inning. He allowed one hit and struck out three.

The Tigers scored the only runs of the game in the second inning.

Sophomore rightfielder Peter Bowles led off with a single to rightfield. On a hit-and-run play, first baseman Brendan Butler singled to left, giving Towson runners on first and third. After Butler stole second base, junior second baseman Mike Draper hit a sacrifice fly to score Bowles with the first run of the game. Moments later, sophomore centerfielder Richie Blosser hit a sacrifice fly to left as Butler scored to give Towson a 2-0 advantage.

With two outs in the ninth inning, UMBC threatened to tie the game. Freshman catcher Manny Colon reached base when he struck out and ran to first base on a wild pitch. Sophomore Jake Barnes singled to centerfield, putting the tying runs on base. However, Lawler struck out senior Jason Alinder for the final out of the game.

Towson outhit UMBC by a 7-3 margin as seven different Tigers got hits. Blosser had the only extra base hit of the contest, a double to left.

The Tigers, who have won four games in a row, return to action this weekend with a three-game series at Old Dominion University.
