NEWARK, Del. - The Towson softball team continued its Colonial Athletic Association schedule with a pair of games at Delaware on Saturday. However, despite a total of 15 hits over the two games, the Tigers (15-20, 0-5 CAA) were defeated 4-2 in game one and 6-3 in game two by Delaware (24-6, 5-0 CAA).
In game one, the Tigers sent six batters to the plate in the first inning and scored the game's first run. Sophomore shortstop Hailey Balk, the team's leading hitter this season, led off the game with a single. After advancing to second later in the inning of a groundout by Delanie Dunham, Balk came around to score on a single by senior catcher Jillian Donnelly, giving Towson a 1-0 lead.
Towson add its second run in the fourth inning when a single by Emily Miller scored pinch runner Maureen Hepner and gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead for senior ace pitcher Katie Lingmai.
Lingmai allowed just two Blue Hen hits over the first four innings, but Delaware was able to threaten the veteran Tiger pitcher in the fifth inning. Delaware scored its first run when Lara Andrews singled home Hannah George, who doubled to open the inning. Andrews would then come around to score on Gina Knutson's hit and knot the score at 2-2 after five innings.
The Blue Hens added two runs in the sixth inning to secure the victory.
In game two, the Tiger bats came alive as the team out-hit Delaware 9-7. However, the Blue Hens scored three runs in the first inning on three hits, giving Blue Hens starting pitcher Chenxi Jiao a 3-0 lead with which to work.
The Tiger offense was led by Bina Abbott and Olivia Yarbrough in game two, who both went 2-for-3 with a run batted in for the game.
Abbott scored on a triple by Yarbrough in the fifth inning and then drove in a run of her own when the senior first baseman singled and scored Stevie Patnode in the sixth inning.
The Tigers and Blue Hens will conclude the series Sunday at 11 a.m.
