TOWSON, Md. - The Tigers (8-10-1) began their second home tournament in two weeks, but fell to the Brown Bears 2-1 Friday afternoon at the Tiger Softball Complex.
The game featured two pitchers who both performed superbly, as Towson senior Katie Lingmai and Brown's Sarah Ropiak were unfazed by gusty winds and cold conditions during the game.
The Tiger senior was challenged by a Brown lineup that worked deep into pitch counts, but only allowed two runs in six innings for Towson. Lingmai gave up just four hits and lowered her earned run average to 4.53.
She struck out six, including a pair in a crucial spot in the fourth inning. After allowing the first four Bear batters of the inning to reach base and walking in a run, Lingmai posted back-to-back strikeouts of Jen Kries and Kelsey Williams to get two outs in the inning. She then got Alyssa Caplan to foul out to first base, escaping the jam and trailing only 2-1.
Towson run came on a memroable play from freshman outfielder Courtney Johnson in the second inning. With runners on second and third base, Johnson collected her first career hit, a single to left field that scored senior catcher Jillian Donnelly and gave Towson a 1-0 lead.
Brown would answer in the bottom of the frame, getting a solo home run off the bat of Trista Chavez to tie the score, 1-1.
Ropiak earned her first win of the season as Brown improved to 1-5 overall.
Donnelly went 2-for-3 at the plate and raised her batting average to a team-high .351.
Towson continues the tournament Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
