BALTIMORE, Md. - The Tigers earned their second straight win on Wednesday, a road win over cross-town rival UMBC by a score of 10-0 in a shortened six inning game. The Tigers had a season-high 13 hits, including five doubles, and also stole four bases.
Towson (19-23-1, 2-7 CAA) sent eight batters to the plate in the first inning, and each of the first five hitters reached base for the Tigers. After Hailey Balk reached first base on an error, Olivia Yarbrough beat out a close play at first base to put runners on first and second base for third baseman Delanie Dunham. The junior hit UMBC pitcher Heather Brown's pitch over the leftfield fence for a home run, her fourth of the season and gave the Tigers a 3-0 lead.
The Tigers weren't done scoring in the first inning, as Macie McGeehan hit a double that scored Jillian Donnelly later in the frame and gave the Tigers a 4-0 lead.
UMBC threatened to score in the third inning against Tiger starting pitcher Katie Lingmai. Jane Pardo singled to lead off the bottom of the inning. After a Towson error, Lingmai loaded the bases by hitting Chelsea Bertoglio with a pitch. Lingmai would get out of the inning unharmed, though, by inducing a groundout to third base to end the inning and the threat.
Towson added six runs in the sixth inning, including a two-run single by Balk, who advanced to third base on an error by UMBC's outfield. Caitie Barber and Kelli Lyons also doubled in the inning, as the Tigers added insurance runs for Lingmai.
Lingmai was excellent in the circle, throwing all six innings for the Tigers and yielding just three hits. She picked up her tenth win of the season for Towson, striking out five batters while issuing no walks.
Over her last 25 innings pitched, Lingmai has given up just 10 hits and struck out 29, while posting a 1.12 earned run average and an unblemished 4-0 record.
Towson will next host Drexel in a Colonial Athletic Association series. The teams will play two games on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m. before completing the series on Sunday with a single game at 1 p.m.
