TOWSON, Md. - Delanie Dunham, Bina Abbott and Caitie Barber all hit home runs, leading the Tigers to a sweep of a doubleheader over Drexel on Saturday by scores of 4-0 and 8-0 at the Tiger Softball Complex.
Towson (21-23-1, 4-7 CAA) greatly improved its Colonial Athletic Association standings by winning both games against Drexel after winning just two of its first nine conference contests.
The Tigers got a clutch home run by Barber in the fifth inning of game one, as the freshman launched a solo-home run over the centerfield wall. The homer broke a scoreless tie after pitchers Tara Konopka of Drexel and Tiger senior Katie Lingmai pitched very well and each team's offense off the scoreboard through four innings.
Towson added three runs in the sixth inning, including an RBI double from sophomore Macie McGeehan and Abbott's two-run homer off Konopka.
Barber went 3-for-3 in game one with the home run, while Lingmai threw her sixth shutout of the season en route to improving to 11-12 this season. She allowed only four hits and two walks while striking out six batters. The win was her fifth straight victorious decision.
In game two, the Tigers jumped on the Dragon pitching staff early, scoring four runs in the first inning and never looking back. Dunham, McGeehan and Jillian Donnelly each had run scoring hits in the frame, while Kelli Lyons drew a bases loaded walk to put the Tigers in front 4-0 after the first inning.
Freshman Ambar Hickman was very good in the circle, throwing her third shutout of the season and yielding just four base runners in the game. Hickman threw five shutout innings and picked up her first win since March 10. She is now 5-4 this season.
The game ended in the fifth inning due to the run-rule, as the Tigers capped the scoring in the third inning on Dunham's fifth home run of the season. She leads the team with 41 hits and 30 runs batted in after driving in four runs in game two. She also scored two runs in game two.
Towson and Drexel will finish the series Sunday at 1 p.m. in a single game.
