WILMINGTON, N.C. - Jillian Donnelly and Maureen Hepner both homered, leading the Towson University softball team to an 8-4 victory over UNC Wilmington (13-30, 2-12 CAA) on Sunday afternoon. The win completed the three-game sweep of the Seahawks by the Tigers (26-23-1, 8-7 CAA), who have now won nine straight games overall. It is the longest winning streak for the team since they won 10 in a row in 2010.
Towson scored three runs in the first inning, including two on a single from second baseman Macie McGeehan. She brought home Donnelly and Olivia Yarbrough with her base hit and is now second on the team with 29 runs batted in this season.
The Seahawks answered after the Tigers added another run in the top of the second. UNC Wilmington walked three times in the bottom of the inning, including a bases loaded walk drawn by Olivia Poplin that gave the Seahawks their first run and cut the Tiger advantage to 4-1.
Tiger pitcher Katie Lingmai earned her 15th win of the season despite walking seven batters in four innings of work. She gave up three hits and three runs while striking out three.
Hepner added her solo home run in the sixth inning and Donnelly hit a two-run shot in the seventh to back Lingmai and rookie reliever Ambar Hickman. The freshman earned her first career save as part of the victory, pitching three innings and yielding only a single run.
Yarbrough had three hits and two runs scored for the Tigers in the win, while Hepner and Donnelly each have three home runs this season.
The Tigers will return home for a three-game series against George Mason on Saturday, April 27 beginning with a doubleheader at 12 p.m.
