BOX SCORE TOWSON, Md. - Seniors
Katie Ponce and
Morgan Fraczkowski each scored goals in the Towson women's soccer team's 2-0 win over Elon in a Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) matchup.
"I think something to play for this weekend, our girls came out and played like that," said Head Coach
Greg Paynter. "This time of year, if you want to get things done, you have to rely on the seniors to do it. With Morgan scoring her first career goal, Ponce coming through with another game-winner and Quinn made the saves she had to make. The seniors are going to be the ones to carry us."
Towson (5-8-4, 2-4-2 CAA) got off to a slow start but recovered quickly. The Tigers controlled possession for most of the game, and they capitalized on their dominance just before the half when Ponce received a pass from freshman
Cait Oswald and sent a hard shot from the top of the 18-yard box past Phoenix (5-11, 1-7 CAA) keeper Kate Murphy.
The Tigers continued to press offensively in the second half, getting quality shots from seniors
Sofia Read and
Katlyn Axenfeld and freshman
Gabby Scirica. Fraczkowski sealed the win with her first career goal at 69:43 when she tapped home a pass from six yards out after Scirica sent in a cross.
Towson outshot Elon 21-6 and had eight corners to the Phoenixes' one. Murphy made eight saves for Elon, while senior goalkeeper
Erin Quinn wasn't too troubled (two saves).
Towson returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 26 when the Tigers host William & Mary at 2 p.m. Towson will honor its five-member senior class in a ceremony after the game.
