Tigers Host Rider as Part of Preseason WNIT Consolation

IT'S GOOD TO BE HOME: After opening the season with a tough 71-64 loss at Penn State, the Towson women's basketball team returns home for this weekend's Preseason WNIT consolation bracket. The Tigers welcome Rider, St. Francis Brooklyn and North Dakota for the weekend's action. Towson faces Rider on Friday, Nov. 21 at 6:30 p.m.

SERIES HISTORY: Towson renews its rivalry with Rider in tonight's contest. It will be the 25th meeting all-time and first since 2007. The Tigers lead the series 15-8 as the two squads use to meet regularly as part of the East Coast Conference (ECC). Towson has won three straight in the series, including a 74-68 win in Lawrenceville when the two squads met in 2007.

PRESEASON WNIT: The Tigers are making their second appearance in the Preseason WNIT. Towson opened the 2009-10 campaign by competing in the event. That year, the Tigers fell to West Virginia, 79-42 in the opener. Towson returned home to host a consolation bracket and defeated Winthrop (56-46) and North Carolina A&T (74-69). So far this season, the Tigers dropped a tough 71-64 decision to Penn State. The Tigers still have the two games remaining in the tournament.

PILING UP THE POINTS: Junior guard Dominique Johnson made the most of her opportunities in the first game of 2014-15. Johnson exploded for a career-high 32 points at Penn State. She scored 30 or more points in a game for the second time in her career. It was tied for the 11th most points in a single-game at Towson.

SMITH SHINES: Redshirt freshman forward Jordyn Smith had to sit out the 2013-14 season due to a preseason injury. With her first appearance in the Penn State game, she showed what she's capable of. Smith had nine rebounds in eight minutes of action to lead the Tigers in rebounding.

A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING: Towson freshman guard Breonn Hughey proved in the season opener that she can do a little bit of everything. Hughey recorded eight points and six rebounds against the Nittany LIons. She also dished out seven assists with just three turnovers in 40 minutes of work.

GOING DEEP: Towson junior guard Dominique Johnson continues to cement her name firmly in the Tiger record book. Johnson drained six three-pointers in the opener at Penn State. At this point in her career, Johnson has made 91 career three-pointers, which ranks 12th in school history. Her 58 triples last season ranked fifth in single-season history at Towson. Johnson needs nine more three-pointers to become the eighth player in program history to make 100 or more career three-pointers. The school record for three-pointers made is 190 set by Mia Chapman.

UP NEXT: The winner of Friday's game will face the winner of North Dakota/St. Francis Brooklyn on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 6:30 p.m. The loser of the first two games will meet at 4:00 p.m.
