TIPPING THINGS OFF: Towson makes the short trip to UMBC for Tuesday night's game. The Tigers and Retrievers will tip things off at 5 p.m. in RAC Arena.
SERIES HISTORY: Towson resumes one of its longest running non-conference rivalries with Tuesday's game against UMBC. The game will be the 48th all-time meeting between the two teams, whose campuses are separated by just 20 miles. The Tigers lead the series 34-14 and have won three straight following a 64-57 victory last year in SECU Arena. The Tigers were led by
LaTorri Hines-Allen's 20 points and eight rebounds in that game. UMBC's last win in the series came during the 2010-11 season at home.
AGAINST IN-STATE FOES: The Tigers are playing the first of four games against a team from the state of Maryland tonight. Last season, Towson went 3-3 against teams from Maryland. That included victories over UMBC, Loyola and Coppin State. In the last five years, Towson is 17-11 against in-state teams.
WELCOME TO THE BLOCK PARTY: Towson comes into play this week leading the CAA in blocked shots per game (5.3 per game). On Friday night against Rider, the Tigers recorded nine blocked shots. It was the most blocks in a game since the Tigers blocked 10 against Hofstra during the 2012-13 season. Five Tigers have blocked at least one shot so far this season. That group is led by redshirt senior forward
LaTorri Hines-Allen, who has five. Hines-Allen is third in the CAA with an average of 1.7 blocks per game. Senior guard
Ciara Webb has four blocks in the first three games and is sixth in the CAA with an average of 1.3 per game.
THE BIG 1-0-0: A win over UMBC tonight would give Towson head coach
Niki Reid Geckeler the 100th coaching victory of her career. Reid Geckeler compiled 85 wins during her five years at Howard. So far at Towson, she has 14 wins, including Friday's victory over Rider.
TIME TO BE ROAD WARRIORS: Tuesday's game is the first of seven straight on the road for the Tigers. It is the longest stretch away from home since the Tigers played six straight on the road from 1990-91. The Tigers have won 15 games in the last three years away from home. Towson will return to SECU Arena following this trip to host George Mason on Dec. 28.
FROM BEHIND THE ARC: Junior guard
Dominique Johnson hit two more three-pointers in the Tigers' game against North Dakota. So far this season, Johnson is 13-for-33 (39.4%) from three-point range. Entering play this week, she leads the CAA in three-pointers made (4.3 per game). Johnson ranks eighth in the league for three-point field goal percentage.
UP NEXT: Towson will be back in action on Friday, Nov. 28 when the LIU Brooklyn Tournament begins. The Tigers will face Rhode Island on Friday at 4:30 p.m. and La Salle on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
