TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University men's swimming and diving program improved to 5-1, 2-0 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) as they defeated George Washington by a score of 195-74 on Saturday afternoon.
"It's great to beat a team that's very talented," Head Coach
Pat Mead said. "I think we had some people who stepped up today and took advantage of the opportunity today with it being the last home meet of the fall semester. We continue to see certain people, no matter what events we put them in, continue to step up and swim fast."
Jon Burr and
John Gartland led the Tiger effort as they won every event that they swam in.
Burr combined with
Matt Hans,
Matt Collingwood and
Sawyer Martin for a victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:10.38).
Burr's other victories came in the 200-yard butterfly (1:52.47), the 500-yard freestyle (4:36.08) and the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:32.38).
Gartland teamed with
Nick Breschi,
Matt McKenney and Hans for a win in the 200-yard medley relay, timing 1:33.10.
Gartland earned victories in the 100-yard breaststroke (56.76) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:04.91).
Hans had an individual victory with a first-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (51.27).
The 50-yard freestyle was successful for the Tigers as they earned the one, two, three finish. Martin timed 22.07 for first-place while Collingwood (22.10) and
Erik
Ripley (22.50) finished in second and third, respectfully.
Martin's final victory came in the 100-yard freestyle when he timed 47.15.
McKenney won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:41.86 while Breschi finished in second with a time of 1:42.17.
Noah Pritchard won the 100-yard backstroke in 52.44.
Ripley won the 200-yard backstroke in 1:55.89 while
Colin Roddy finished in second-place with a time of 1:58.75.
On the diving boards,
Nick Essing saw improvement on the season as he scored 129.60 in the one-meter event and 148.35 in the three-meter event.
"Today was a good meet but we need more of the new names to step up if we're going to be really competitive at the end of the year," Mead said. "We'll look for our next meet, the Bucknell Invitational, for some swimmers to step up."
The Tigers return to action on November 21 as they travel to Bucknell for a three-day invitational.
