Tigers Face Tough Test in Visit to No. 15/10 Maryland Sunday

OPENING TIP: Towson faces a stiff challenge when it heads to No. 15/10 Maryland on Sunday, Dec. 7. Opening tip from College Park is set for 2 p.m.

SERIES HISTORY: Sunday's game will be the 20th all-time between the Tigers and the Terrapins. Maryland leads the series 14-5 and has won four in a row following an 90-53 win last year in SECU Arena. Tanisha McTiller had a game-high 25 points in that game while Alyssa Thomas led Maryland with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Towson's biggest win in the series came during the 2009-10 season as the Tigers knocked off then No. 25 Maryland, 67-55 in the Towson Center. Shanae Baker-Brice scored 25 points to lead Towson to victory.

AGAINST IN-STATE OPPONENTS: The Tigers are playing their final game against a team from the state of Maryland Sunday. Towson has already picked up a 59-54 win over UMBC and a 63-50 win at Loyola. The team suffered a tough 55-51 loss to Navy. Last season, Towson went 3-3 against teams from Maryland. That included victories over UMBC, Loyola and Coppin State. In the last five plus years, Towson is 19-12 against in-state teams.

WELCOME TO THE BLOCK PARTY: Towson turned in a huge performance with 11 blocked shots on Thursday night at Loyola. Six Tigers recorded at least one block and that group was led by senior guard Markell Smith who had a career-high three. The 11 blocked shots are the most by any team in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) this season and are the second most in program history. The 11 blocks are tied for eighth most in the NCAA this season for a single-game. The Tigers are currently second in the CAA in blocked shots per game (4.6). Nine of the 11 Tigers that have appeared in a game this season have recorded at least one blocked shot. Redshirt senior forward LaTorri Hines-Allen leads the team with 11 blocks.

SIXTY BELOW: Towson held Loyola to a season-low 50 points allowed on Thursday night. It was the lowest point total the Tigers have held an opponent to since Dec. 28 of last year when they limited Loyola to 46 points. Towson is 3-2 this year when it holds an opponent to under 60 points in a game. Since the start of the 2011-12 season, the Tigers are 27-12 when they hold an opponent to 59 points or less.

HITTING OUR SHOTS: Towson turned in its strongest shooting performance of the season against Loyola. Towson made 24-of-55 shots for a 43.6% field goal percentage against the Greyhounds. It was the first time the Tigers shot 40% or better from the field since they shot 44.1% in the home win over College of Charleston on March 1 of last year. Towson is 5-1 under Head Coach Niki Reid Geckeler when it shoots 40% or better from the field.

DOUBLE YOUR PLEASURE: Redshirt senior forward LaTorri Hines-Allen has been a dominate force for the Tigers on both ends of the court this season. Hines-Allen comes into this weekend's action averaging 17.5 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. She is third in the CAA in points per game and second in rebounds per game. Hines-Allen and James Madison's Lauren Okafor are the only two CAA players averaging a double-double so far this year.

UP NEXT: Towson takes 11 days off for finals following Sunday's game. The Tigers will be back in action on Thursday, Dec. 18 when they travel to Wake Forest for an 11:30 a.m. game.
