CONWAY, S.C. - Missy McCormick hit a grand slam and had four runs batted in (RBI), leading the Towson University softball team to a 7-2 win over the Virginia Cavaliers in the team's final game of the Kickin' Chicken Classic at Coastal Carolina on Sunday afternoon.
In Towson's opening game of the day, the Tigers (5-3) fell to Purdue 11-7.
After taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning, McCormick blasted her third homer of the season in a six-run second inning for the Tigers. After Hailey Balk singled in a run and Maureen Hepner drew a bases loaded walk to drive in another run, McCormick slugged her long drive with the bases loaded giving the Tigers a comfortable 7-0 advantage.
Towson sophomore pitcher Ambar Hickman made the lead stand up, throwing all seven innings in the win for the Tigers and giving up just two runs on nine hits. She struck out six and walked three to pick up her third win of the season.
Balk and Hepner each had two hits in the win, while sophomore outfielder Olivia Yarbrough also scored two runs.
Against Purdue, the Tigers compiled 13 hits, but the Boilermaker bats were also potent. Ashley Burkhardt and Danielle Fletcher both homered for Purdue, which scored multiple runs in the first, second, fourth and sixth innings.
Delanie Dunham and Balk countered with homeruns of their own for Towson. But Purdue pitcher Lilly Fecho struck out eight in seven innings and did not walk a batter despite allowing all seven of Towson's runs to preserve the win.
The Tigers resume play on Saturday at the Longwood Spring Classic. The tournament gets underway for Towson against Lafayette at 11 a.m.
