Tigers Drop Two at Longwood Spring Classic

FARMVILLE, Va. – The Towson University softball team opened the Longwood Spring Classic on Saturday afternoon, falling by an 8-6 score in 11 innings to Lafayette and also dropping a 9-1 game to Longwood in six innings in its second and final game of the day.

Against Lafayette, the Tigers (5-5) played their longest game of the season but were unable to come away with a victory. Hailey Balk went 3-for-6, while Jessica South went three-for-four with her first career homerun and three runs batted in for Towson.

South's homer came at a great time for the Tigers. With the game tied 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth, South put her shot over the outfield fence and gave Towson a 4-2 advantage entering the seventh. However, the Leopards would tie the game on a single by Bryn Gornick and a misplayed ball in the Tiger outfield to send the game into extra innings.

Each team scored a run in the eighth and tenth innings, before the Leopards scored two twice in the top of the 11th to take the lead for good.

Freshman Megan Chocallo pitched a season-high 11 innings for Towson, striking out seven and walking just two. She gave up three earned runs.

The Tigers scored the first run of the game against host Longwood in the first inning, but were unable to contain the Lancer offense.

Emily Murphy and Lauren Baltzell hit back-to-back homers in the fourth inning to lead the way for Longwood. The Lancers consistently put runs on the board, scoring in all six innings. Longwood scored twice in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, ending the game due to the run rule on Carly Adams' infield single that scored Baltzell.

Libby Morris earned her first win of the season for Longwood, yielding just five hits in six innings. She did not allow a run after the first inning.

South was the lone Tiger with multiple hits in each game. Saturday, she went a combined five-for-six at the plate.

Towson plays its final two games of the Classic Sunday starting at 11 a.m. against Lafayette. The Tigers play Longwood at 3 p.m.
