Tigers Split With NC A&T On Wednesday

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Junior pitcher Missy McCormick threw a complete game shutout on Wednesday afternoon, helping the Towson University softball team to a 6-0 victory over North Carolina A&T in the first game of a doubleheader.

In game two, Towson (13-9) was defeated, 10-7.

The Tigers jumped ahead of the Aggies in game one in the third inning, when Macie McGeehan scored on an error as a result of a sacrifice bunt by Towson's Olivia Yarbrough. McGeehan singled to get on base earlier in the inning.

The Tigers also scored twice in the fifth and seventh innings to give McCormick ample offense to support her in the circle.

Delanie Dunham hit a two-run homerun in the fifth and Hailey Balk hit a two-run double in the seventh to help McCormick earn her sixth win of the season.

McCormick allowed just five hits and a walk while striking out six batters.

Balk, Yarbrough and McGeehan all had two hits in the win.

The Aggies put the Tigers in an early 5-0 hole in game two, but the Tigers then responded with seven unanswered runs to take a 7-5 lead after three innings.

The Aggies got a two-run double from Jax Kaye Woodard and the Tigers committed two errors in the first inning, allowing the home squad to race out to a 5-0 lead after the first inning.

However, the resilient Tigers got a two-run double from Dunham, a two-run single from Maureen Hepner and an RBI from Balk in the top of the second to tie the game at 5-5.

Then in the third, Courtney Johnson blasted her third homerun of the year to give the Tigers the lead, and the Tigers added another run on an RBI base knock by Balk.

However, North Carolina A&T scored two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to take the lead for good.

On the day, Dunham was combined for  three RBIs and was three-for-seven at the plate.

Balk had five hits anf five RBIs in the doubleheader, while Johnson's seasonal total of 10 RBIs along with her three homers both mark career-highs.
