TOWSON, Md. – Senior guard Tanisha McTiller scored a game-high 26 points to the lead the Towson University women's basketball team to a 75-63 win over College of Charleston on Sunday afternoon in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action. McTiller had help to secure the “Senior Day” victory as redshirt junior forward LaTorri Hines-Allen finished with 25 points.
“Tremendous win to end our year at SECU Arena, it's been a year of ups and downs at home but it's nice to go out with a win,” said Towson Head Coach Niki Reid Geckeler.
“It meant a lot to get the win tonight and it's a credit to my teammates for helping me get that last home win,” said McTiller.
The two teams battled early and found themselves tied at 8-8 with 16:55 left in the first half. A 15-6 run allowed the home team to open up a 23-14 advantage with 8:58 to play in the first half. Hines-Allen had seven points for the Tigers during that stretch while McTiller added four. College of Charleston (15-13, 8-7 CAA) cut the Tiger lead to five, 23-18 on a Mikaela Hopkins' lay-up at 7:45. Towson (13-15, 7-8 CAA) responded by scoring the game's next 12 points to push its lead to 35-18 with 3:31 to play in the half. McTiller tallied half of the Tiger points during that run. The Cougars closed the half on a 10-2 run to cut the Tiger lead to 37-28 at the intermission.
Towson shot 47.1% from the field in the first half while College of Charleston shot 41.4%. The Tigers held a 23-16 advantage in the rebounding battle during the first 20 minutes of play. McTiller had 16 points in the first half while Hines-Allen added 15 points.
The Cougars opened the second half on an 8-3 run, which cut the Towson advantage to 40-36 with 16:11 left in the game. Hopkins had six of the College of Charleston's eight during that stretch. The Tigers used a 7-0 run of their own to push the lead back to 11, 47-36 with 14:40 to play in the game. Sophomore guard Dominique Johnson went 3-for-4 from the foul line during that run for Towson. The two squads continued to battle on both ends of the court. Junior guard Markell Smith hit one-of-two from the charity stripe at 9:49 which gave Towson a 51-42 lead. The Cougars scored five of the next seven points to make it a 53-47 game with 7:13 to play. Afreyea Tolbert had four points for College of Charleston during that run.
Towson scored eight of the next 10 points to take a 61-49 advantage with 4:55 to play. It was the Tigers' largest lead of the game. Hines-Allen had four of the Tigers' eight points. The Towson lead would fluctuate between seven and 11 points over the four minutes. McTiller capped the scoring with a lay-up with 26 seconds left which gave Towson the 75-63 victory.
Towson shot 40% from the field in the second half and finished the game shooting 44.1%. College of Charleston shot 31.7% in the second stanza and 35.7% for the game. The Tigers won the rebounding battle 48-41.
McTiller added seven rebounds to her game-high 26 points. Hines-Allen recorded her team-leading 10th “double-double” of the year as she had a game-high 14 rebounds in addition to the 25 points. Smith had nine points and eight rebounds while Johnson had nine points.
Hopkins led College of Charleston with 15 points and eight rebounds while Tolbert had 11 points and nine boards.
Towson wraps up the regular season on Wednesday, Mar. 5 when it travels to Drexel for a 7 p.m. game.
