Towson Softball Wraps Up Tiger Clash

TOWSON, Md. - Despite a complete game effort from junior pitcher Missy McCormick, the Towson University softball team was unable to come away with a victory on Sunday morning as the Quinnipiac Bobcats upended the Tigers, 2-1, as part of the Tiger Clash at the Towson Softball Complex.

Against Quinnipiac, the Tigers also wore pink wristbands, belts and shoelaces to support breast cancer research and awareness. Breast cancer survivor Mary Alane Downs, the wife of Tiger volunteer assistant coach Chris Downs, threw out a ceremonial first pitch before the action began.

In the final game for the Tigers (16-11), Towson fell to Wagner 6-2.

McCormick was very good in the circle against the Bobcats, holding Quinnipiac to eight hits in seven innings. She struck out seven and walked two.

The junior was also outstanding at the plate, hitting her team-leading seventh homerun of the season in the second inning.

Her seven homers leads the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA. Her 36 RBIs this season are tied with Sammi DiPompo (2009) and Stacey Smith (2001) for the ninth-most in a single season in Towson school history.

Quinnipiac scored both of its runs in the fifth, taking the lead on an RBI triple by Jordan Paolucci.

Sydney Robey earned her first win of the season in the circle for Quinnipiac.

Against Wagner, Towson got off to a hot start in the first inning. The team scored its first run of the game when Olivia Yarbrough crossed the plate after a Wagner wild pitch. McCormick's sacrifice fly to bring home Maureen Hepner put the Tigers up by a pair of runs after Towson's first at-bats.

Abby Beasley hit an RBI single with the bases loaded in the third inning, as Wagner scored three additional runs in the frame to take a 4-2 advantage over the Tigers.

Taylor Rauscher hit a solo homer in the sixth and Beth Lewis singled home another run in the seventh to give Wagner the final 6-2 advantage.

Towson returns to action on Tuesday as it travels to Georgetown to face the Hoyas at Guy Mason Field beginning at 3 p.m.
