Homeruns Power Tigers To Split With Delaware

TOWSON, Md. - Maureen Hepner, Holiday Cahill and Missy McCormick all hit solo homeruns, leading the Towson University softball team to a 3-2 win in game one of a doubleheader over Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) rival Delaware on Saturday at the Tiger Softball Complex.

In game two, Hailey Balk tied a Towson school record for hits in a single game by going five-for-five at the plate, but Delaware (19-18, 5-5 CAA) came away with an 8-7 victory in eight innings.

The Blue Hens got off to a 2-0 lead on the Tigers (19-17, 1-4 CAA) in the second inning, when Michelle McKinnon and Jess Grisler each tallied RBI singles.

But Towson responded when Cahill hit her third homer of the year to lead off the bottom of the third, cutting the Delaware lead in half.

The in the fourth, Hepner and McCormick hit back-to-back homers, giving the Tigers a 3-2 advantage.

The duo each have nine homers this season, which is tied for the CAA lead.

McCormick was also very good in the circle in game one, throwing seven innings and allowing just two runs on seven hits. She struck out four and did not walk a batter while earning her 10th win of the season. Prior to 2014, McCormick entered the season with 11 total career victories.

In game two, the Tigers raced out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning on the strength of some extra base hits. After McCormick walked to load the bases, Olivia Yarbrough scored a run on a wild pitch with Jessica South at the plate. Though South struck out, Delanie Dunham roped roped a two-run triple down the leftfield line, scoring McCormick and Hepner. Later in the frame, Cahill added an RBI double to put the Tigers ahead, 4-0.

After scoring five times in the fourth inning to pull within a 6-5 margin, Delaware's Shelby Jones hit a two-run homer in the sixth to lift the Blue Hens to a 7-6 advantage.

But the Tigers answered with an RBI single from Nicole Delgado to tie the game at 7-7 in the bottom of the sixth.

Delaware took the lead for good in the eighth inning on a single from Jones.

Balk went five-for-five in game two, tying Julie Ciccarelli and Beth Chapman for the most hits in a single game in school history. Ciccarelli did it twice and how the most recent performance prior to Balk, doing so in 1999 against Delaware State. Balkis batting .417, which tops the league.

The Tigers now have 33 total homers this season, just three shy of the school record for a single season of 36, set in 2007.

McCormick has 42 RBIs this season to lead the CAA and is just two shy of tying Mindy Bean's single season school record of 44 set in 2009.

Towson and Delaware wrap up the series on Sunday with a single game starting at 1 p.m.
