TOWSON, Md. - Olivia Yarbrough went two-for-four with a run scored and the Towson University softball team used a big first inning to defeat Delaware (19-19, 5-6 CAA), 3-1, in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play at the Tiger Softball Complex on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, Towson (20-17) improved to 2-4 in the CAA and earned a series victory over the Blue Hens after splitting two games on Saturday.
The Tigers scored all of their runs in third inning off of Delaware starting pitcher Kelly Lupton, as the Delaware hurler was unable to make it past the first inning.
Towson got its first runner in scoring position in the first inning when Hailey Balk hit a sacrifice bunt to move Yarbrough to second base. Maureen Hepner then hit a double to score Yarbrough. Hepner later scored on a double by Delanie Dunham. The Tigers took a 3-0 advantage when Holiday Cahill singled home Dunham.
Tiger pitcher Missy McCormick improved her record to 11-7 by throwing all seven innings for Towson and yielding just one Delaware run which was scored in the seventh inning. Prior to 2014, the junior had 11 total victories over her past two seasons. She struck out four and walked one while allowing seven hits.
Lisa Stacevicz led Delaware at the plate by going two-for-three.
Towson returns home for a doubleheader against Howard on Tuesday starting at 3 p.m.
