TOWSON, Md. - The Towson University softball team earned a sweep over the Howard Bison on Wednesday afternoon, concluding the Tigers' home non-conference schedule with a 6-0 win in game one and an 8-0 win in game two in five innings.
The Tigers (22-17, 2-4 CAA) were aided by the stellar pitching of sophomore Ambar Hickman and freshman Megan Chocallo. Both hurlers threw shutouts in the sweep for Towson.
In game one, with Hickman in the circle, the Tigers got two hits and two RBIs from Hailey Balk to lead the way against the Bison (2-30).
Leading 2-0 in the fifth inning, the Tigers broke the game open with four more runs. Run scoring singles from Balk, Maureen Hepner and Jessica South put runs on the board for Towson. Kate Helmick then later scored on an error to give the Tigers a 6-0 advantage.
That was plenty for Hickman, who tossed her team-leading fifth complete game of the season and yielded just three hits. She improved her record to 7-5 and lowered her ERA to 3.85 as part of the win.
In game two, the Tiger pitching staff was again impressive, as Chocallo allowed just one base hit in five innings before the game was called due to the run rule.
Olivia Yarbrough, Delanie Dunham and Holiday Cahill all had two hits in the night cap, as Dunham also drove in three runs. Balk and Hepner each added two RBIs.
Dunham had the two pivotal hits for the Tigers, lacing an RBI double in the bottom of the third and legging out a two-run triple in the fourth.
Dunham, Yarbrough and Nicole Delgado all scored two runs for Towson in game two.
In perhaps her finiest outing of the season, Chocallo blanked the Bison by striking out four and allowing no walks. The lone hit was a flare into the outfield off the bat of Jasmine Gammons.
Towson returns to action on Friday with a doubleheader against Colonial Athletic Association counterpart Drexel beginning at 1 p.m.
