PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Maureen Hepner hit a three-run homerun in the first inning and Missy McCormick pitched a complete game shutout as the Towson University softball team defeated the Drexel Dragons 5-0 on Saturday afternoon in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play.
With the win, the Tigers improved to 24-18, including a 4-5 CAA mark.
Hepner went one-for-three in the game, smashing her 10th homer of the season off of Rose Portiolli in the top half of the first inning. Her RBI total now stands at 45 and establishes a new single season school record. She broke the record set by the Tigers' Mindy Bean in 2009, when Bean drove in 44 runs.
The homer from Hepner energized the Tigers and McCormick, who for the second consecutive day set down the Dragon offense rather easily. After allowing just one run and three hits in a game one victory on Friday, McCormick was equally impressive Saturday by allowing just three hits and three walks for her 13th win of the season. She lowered her earned run average to 3.08 in the win.
Olivia Yarbrough went three-for-four with two runs scored in the win for Towson, raising her batting average to .374 for the season.
Jessica South and Delanie Dunham each had two hits as the Tigers pounded out 10 hits against the Dragon pitching.
The Tigers return to action Wednesday at Mount St. Mary's beginning at 3 p.m.
