Tigers Upend Mount St. Mary's, 3-1

EMMITSBURG, Md. – The Towson University softball team received a strong pitching performance from junior Missy McCormick to lead the team to a 3-1 victory at Mount St. Mary's on Wednesday afternoon.

McCormick established a season and career-high by striking out 13 batters while throwing all seven innings. She allowed only five hits and walked three to improve her record to 14-7. The 13 strikeouts were tied for the second-most in a single game in Towson history. Former Tiger pitcher Katie Lingmai also struck out 13 batters on two occasions.

The Tigers improved to 25-18 overall with the win, while Mount St. Mary's fell to 19-18-1.

Towson fell behind early in the second inning when Rachel Heinze hit a single that scored Lindsey Ruhle from second base, as The Mount took a 1-0 lead. Ruhle had reached scoring position after reaching on a Towson error and then advancing to second base on a wild pitch.

The Mount threatened again in the third frame against the Tigers, who faced a bit of a jam after McCormick walked Rachel Gavigan to load the bases. But McCormick got Ruhle to strike out swinging to end the inning and the threat.

In the top of the fourth inning, Towson had a string of four straight hits with one out to get on the scoreboard. After Maureen Hepner flied out to lead off the inning, McCormick hit a double to centerfield. A single by Delanie Dunham brought home McCormick to make the score 1-1. Jessica South and Courtney Johnson followed Dunham with singles to load the bases for Caitie Barber, who got an RBI on a groundout to second base. South was then brought home after Nicole Delgado reached on an error, making the score 3-1 in favor of Towson.

Johnson led the Tigers on the day with two hits, while Dunham went one-for-three with an RBI and a run scored.

The Tigers remain on the road Thursday for a game at Georgetown beginning at 3 p.m.
