HARRISONBURG, Va. - The Towson University softball team opened Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play on Saturday afternoon, falling to the James Madison Dukes in both games of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers (17-14, 0-2 CAA) dropped game one 11-0 in five innings and game two 9-0 in six innings.
Leading 2-0 entering the fourth inning, the Dukes (27-11, 6-2 CAA) piled on nine runs in the fourth inning, including a grandslam from Hannah Hayes to break the game open.
The Tigers got hits from Missy McCormick and Jessica South in game one.
McCormick lead off the top half of the second inning with a double, but Towson was unable to solve Dukes' starting pitcher Heather Kiefer. She allowed just those two hits in 4.1 innings to earn the win in game one.
In game two, the powerful James Madison offense was at it again, striking for three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.
Kiefer was also very good, throwing the entire game and allowing hits by Towson's Hailey Balk and Olivia Yarbrough.
But Kiefer was also able mto pitch out of trouble in game two, getting out a jam in the first inning. Yarbrough led off the game with a single and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt. She then moved over to third base on a groundout.
However, Kiefer induced a popup by McCormick to end the threat.
The game was ended due to the run rule in the sixth inning when Sara Wright hit a pinch-hit two-run homer give the Dukes the 9-0 win.
Towson and the Dukes will conclude the series on Sunday at 2 p.m.
