HARRISONBURG, Va. - Towson University senior Maureen Hepner hit her seventh homerun of the season, but the James Madison Dukes came away with a 10-2 victory in six innings over the Tigers (17-15, 0-3 CAA) on Sunday afternoon.
Hepner tied teammate Missy McCormick for the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) lead with her seventh homer of the year in top of the first inning, giving the Tigers an early 2-0 advantage over the Dukes (28-11, 7-2 CAA).
But, the Dukes responded in the bottom of the first when Caitlin Sandy singled home a run to cut the Tiger lead in half.
The game remained 2-1 in favor of Towson until the bottom of the third, when James Madison loaded the bases for Sandy, who came through again with a two-run single through the middle, putting the Dukes ahead 3-2. The Dukes scored three more times in the frame to take a 6-2 lead.
That was enough for James Madison pitcher Jailyn Ford, who came on in relief and pitched five innings and allowed no runs and five hits while striking out eight to earn her 15th victory of the season.
McCormick finished the game two-for-two for Towson, while Hepner continued her strong offensive production this season. The senior leads Towson with a .467 on-base percentage and a .677 slugging percentage. Her 34 RBIs this season is second on the team.
Towson returns home to the Tiger Softball Complex on Wednesday for a doubleheader against Temple starting at 3 p.m.
