Tigers Fall In Regular Season Finale, 4-1

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Pitcher Hope Klicker allowed just one run in six sharp innings of work and Valerie Cassell went two-for-three with a homerun, leading the College of Charleston softball team to a 4-1 victory over Towson Tigers on Sunday afternoon in the Tigers' final game of the regular season.

The Tigers (27-23, 6-9 CAA) were led by senior third baseman Delanie Dunham, who went two-for-two with a double and an RBI.

The game was tightly contested as Klicker and Towson freshman pitcher Megan Chocallo kept the game scoreless through the first five innings of the game.

In the top half of the sixth, Towson took a 1-0 lead when Dunham's single scored Tiger senior Maureen Hepner from second base. Hepner, who ended the regular season with a Colonial Athletic Association (CAA)-best 12 homers, 50 RBIs and 99 total bases in the regular season, singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch earlier in the inning.

The Cougars (40-14, 14-4 CAA), responded with four runs in the bottom of the sixth, including a two-run homer from Cassell and a two-run double from Lizzy Vaughn. That gave the home team the 4-1 advantage they did not relinquish.

Hepner finished the regular season with 39 runs scored, second in the league, and was the only player in the league with 50 or more RBIs. Teammate Olivia Yarbrough was tops in the CAA with 43 runs scored, helping the Tigers to a single-season school record and league-high 258 runs.

Towson also established a single-season school record with 39 homeruns and is third in the CAA with a .285 batting average.

The Tigers have qualified for their second consecutive CAA Tournament, which begin on Wednesday. Top-seeded James Madison will host the fourth-seeded Tigers in the tournament's first game at 12 p.m.
