HARRISONBURG, Va. – Making its fifth appearance in school history in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) championship game, the Towson University softball team ended its season on Friday, falling to James Madison University by a 4-0 final score.
The top-seeded Dukes (44-13) won their second CAA championship in school history with the win. The team won its first CAA title in 2009.
The fourth-seeded Tigers finished the season 29-25 overall.
Towson threatened to score first in the second inning, loading the bases with no outs. After a pair of walks started the frame, freshman Holiday Cahill struck a well-placed bunt past the James Madison infield to pack the sacks. However, James Madison showed strong fundamental play when Tiger freshman Jessica South hit into a fielder's choice. The Dukes turned a 6-2-5 double play as they retired the lead runners and thwart the threat. Heather Kiefer then struck out Courtney Johnson to retire the side and keep the game scoreless.
The Dukes scored three runs in the third inning, as Jailyn Ford hit an RBI single and Caitlin Sandy added a two-run double off of Towson starting pitcher Missy McCormick.
The Dukes added the game's final run when Cassidy Clayton singled home Taylor Newton in the sixth inning to increase the lead to 4-0.
From there, Kiefer shutdown the Tigers after relieving Ford following the first inning. She allowed three hits in six innings to improve her record to 20-7.
Following the game, Cahill, South and McCormick were named to the CAA All-Tournament Team.
Cahill lead the Tigers in the CAA Tournament with a .455 batting average (five-for-11). South and McCormick each hit two homeruns in the tournament, with McCormick leading the team with six RBIs.
McCormick also threw every inning in the tournament for the Tigers, throwing four complete games in four outings. She had an earned run average of 2.69 in 26.0 innings pitched in the tournament while posting a 2-2 record.
The Tigers set multiple school records throughout the season, including scoring the most runs in a single-season with 273. They also hit the most homeruns in a single season with 44.
A number of individual single-season records were also broken. McCormick and Maureen Hepner tied Aimee Rosa (2008) for the most homeruns in a single season with 12. That figure also led the CAA.
McCormick tallied a single-season school record 53 RBIs, while Hepner set the school record for slugging percentage (.640) and is second all-time at Towson with 51 RBIs in a single season.
Hailey Balk finished the season with 67 hits, tied for the second-most in single season school history and was second in the CAA with a .366 batting average.
Olivia Yarbrough, a first team All-CAA selection, led the league with 45 runs scored, tying the second-highest total in single season school history.
In the circle, McCormick led Tiger pitchers with a 17-11 record, 179.0 innings pitched and a 2.78 earned run average. She threw the first perfect game in school history on April 9 against Temple in a 7-0 Towson win. Her 17 wins are tied for the fourth-most in single season school history.
