NEWARK, Del. - The Towson University men's swimming and diving program improved to 7-1, 3-0 Colonial Athletic Conference (CAA) after defeating conference rival Delaware on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers outscored the Blue Hens 178-120.
"The men swam very tough today and we got the job done," Head Coach
Pat Mead said. "
Matt McKenney had an outstanding meet while
Jeremy Liu and
Matt Hans also swam very well. It was a great team effort and we won some close races which resulted in a team victory."
The Tigers started the meet strong, winning the first three events. Towson earned their first win in the opening 200-yard medley relay.
Nick Breschi,
John Gartland,
Matt McKenney and
Matt Hans swam a combined 1:33.86 for the win.

Matt Lowe won the 1000-yard freestyle, timing 9:31.10. He would earn his second victory in the 500-yard freestyle (4:36.29) later in the meet.

Martin Sawyer swam 1:43.34 for the 200-yard freestyle to pick up the victory.

The 100-yard breaststroke was a strong event for the Tigers as they went one, two and three in the event. Gartland (58.14) took home the first-place finish while
Jeremy Liu (58.21) and
Joel Todd (1:00.01) rounded out the top three.

The 200-yard butterfly was equally successful with Towson earning the top three finishes. McKenney grabbed his second win (1:51.17) while Lowe (1:54.29) and
Jon Burr (1:55.40) followed behind.

Hans won the 50-yard freestyle (21:09) for his second win of the day.

The Tiger success continued again in the 200-yard breaststroke as Liu (2:05.98), Todd (2:10.49) and Gartland (2:10.77) finished one, two, three.

McKenney took home a third win with the 100-yard butterfly (49.95).

Burr grabbed his first win of the day in the 400-yard individual medley, timing 4:06.23.

The Tigers ended the meet just as successfully as they started it, timing 3:08.33 for the win in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Breschi earned his second win in the meet as he combined with
Zach Brech, Sawyer and McKenney. It was Martin's second victory in the meet and McKenney's fourth on the day.

Towson returns home on Saturday, Jan. 24 to host Johns Hopkins in the final home meet of the season. The meet will serve as the team's Senior Day.
