WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Towson University gymnastics team fell to William & Mary, 193.125 – 193.550, on Saturday afternoon at Kaplan Arena.
"We were missing the competitive fire today," Head Coach
Vicki Chliszczyk said. "We didn't hit our three in-meet goals and are walking away disappointed."
The Tigers (1-2) ended the meet on beam which proved to be their best event of the afternoon. Towson earned a team score of 48.775 and had two gymnasts record a 9.8 or higher.
Lauren Ross led the team by tying her career-high beam score of 9.850 for the third time in her career.
Janis Konkle, who led off the event for the Tigers, recorded a 9.800. Her score tied her career-high, set against George Washington in 2013.
"Janis was the reason that we did so well on beam," Chliszczyk said. "She had a strong routine to lead off the event for us and got the energy going. It would have been a game changer if it didn't happen so late in the meet."
Tyra McKellar rounded out the Tiger top-three for the event (9.750) while
Bridget Steffen (9.725) tied her career-high on the balance beam for the third time in her career.
Towson opened the meet on bars were they earned a team score of 48.175 where
Lydia Thompson scored a team-high 9.700.
The Tigers continued to vault where
Katie Sassa was the only Towson gymnast to score higher than 9.600 as she recorded a 9.725 for the event.
Sassa led again as Towson moved to floor, earning a 9.725. McKellar followed close behind with a 9.700.
Towson will look to redeem themselves on Sunday, Jan. 25 when they welcome William & Mary, West Chester and UNC for their home-opener. The quad-meet is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. at SECU Arena.
