Box ScoreSYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Towson men's lacrosse team saw its first game action of the 2015 season on Saturday as the Tigers traveled to fourth-ranked Syracuse for a scrimmage. The Orange, who won a pair of scrimmages last Saturday, outlasted the Tigers, 13-9.
Both squads played their starting units for three quarters with Syracuse leading 10-8 before subs played the majority of the fourth quarter, which featured a running clock.
"Overall, I'm real happy with the way the guys competed and played together as a team," said Tiger Head Coach
Shawn Nadelen. "We struggled at the faceoff at times which allowed Syracuse to have a bulk of the possession, but we had numerous defensive stands.
"It was good to see our defense step up against a really good offense. Our defensive middies did a really solid job and once our offense settled in, I was pleased with how they looked. At the end of the day, our guys were just happy to get out and compete against another team."
Senior
Andrew Hodgson led the Tigers with a game-high four goals and an assist. Junior
Spencer Parks tallied a pair of goals to go along with an assist, while senior
Greg Cuccinello and sophomore
Ryan Drenner each scored a goal and assisted on two tallies.
Trailing 9-3 with 6:17 left in the second quarter, Cuccinello sparked a 5-0 Towson run with a man-up goal after a penalty against SU's Randy Staats. Parks scored off a feed from Cuccinello to cap the Tiger spurt and trim the Orange lead to 9-8 with 6:31 remaining in the third quarter.
Henry Schoonmaker scored for the Orange with 5:42 left in the third quarter to halt the Towson scoring spurt, and the Syracuse reserves outscored the Tigers' second-teamers 3-1 in the fourth period.
Tyler White started for the Tigers in goal and had nine first-half saves.
Towson returns to action on Wednesday when No. 8 Maryland visits Johnny Unitas® Stadium for a 4 p.m. scrimmage. The Tigers will open the regular season at home against No. 5 Johns Hopkins (Feb. 10) and No. 7 Loyola (Feb. 17). Both games are set to start at 6 p.m.
