BATTLE OF THE TIGERS: It's the battle of the Tigers on Sunday, Dec. 20 as Towson welcomes Auburn to SECU Arena. Towson Sports Network's
Ben Rosenbaum and
Ian Jett will have the call for fans starting at 1:40 p.m. A link to live stats can be found on the schedule page of TowsonTigers.com and fans can follow Towson on Twitter (
@Towson_WBB) for in-game updates.
THE ROAR THE MERRIER: Fans attending Sunday's doubleheader (Towson men host Rio Grande at 4:30 p.m.) are encouraged to bring gently used clothing for "The Roar the Merrier" clothing drive. Towson women's basketball senior
Dominique Johnson organized the drive to give the homeless in Baltimore something warm this holiday season.
SERIES HISTORY: Towson will face Auburn for the first time ever Sunday.
IT'S NICE TO MEET YOU: Sunday's game is the fifth straight for the Tigers against teams that they have never faced before this season. The Tigers are making just their fourth appearance against a team from the Southeast Conference (SEC). Towson has faced Missouri and Vanderbilt before. Towson has never faced SEC members - Kentucky, South Carolina, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi State, Tennessee, Auburn, Texas A&M, LSU, Ole Miss and Arkansas. Â
GOING DEEP: Senior guard
Dominique Johnson put on a show from behind the arc at Minnesota. Johnson drained a school record nine three-pointers against the Golden Gophers.
She broke her own school record of eight set against UNCW during the 2013-14 season. The nine three-pointers were also tied for the second most in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) history. Johnson has now connected on five or more three-pointers in a game nine times in her career.
IT'S GOOD TO BE HOME: When Towson takes to the court in SECU Arena to face Auburn it will be the team's first home game since Nov. 24 against UMBC. Since that last home game, the Tigers traveled some 5,107 miles either by bus or by plane for four games. Towson played two games at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville over Thanksgiving. Towson made a mid-week trip to Cornell. The Tigers then headed out to Minnesota. The trip got a couple extra miles on it on the return trip as fog forced the Tigers to go from Minneapolis to Atlanta before arriving at BWI.
THIRTY SOMETHING: Towson senior guard
Dominique Johnson poured in a career-high 35 points in the Tigers' last outing. Johnson's 35 points is tied for the seventh most in single-game history at Towson. She made 11 field goals, nine of which came from three-point range and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the foul line. It was the third time in her career that Johnson tallied 30 or more points in a game.
DON'T I KNOW YOU? While this may be Towson's first ever game against Auburn, Head coach
Niki Reid Geckeler will see a familiar face when she looks at the opponents' bench. Auburn Head coach
Terri Williams Flournoy was the Head coach at Georgetown from 2004-2012. Reid Geckeler served on Williams-Flournoy's staff on the Hilltop from 2004 to 2008. The pair guided the Hoyas to an appearance in the Big East Tournament in their first season.
SHE'LL TAKE THE CHARITY: Towson senior guard
Dominique Johnson went 4-for-4 from the charity stripe against Minnesota. It was the fifth time this season Johnson has converted all of her chances in a game. On the season, she is 20-for-22 (90.9%) from the foul line. Her free throw percentage leads the CAA and entering play this week ranked ninth in the nation.
For her career, Johnson is 171-for-207 (82.6%) from the charity stripe which gives her the second best free throw percentage in school history.
PILING UP THE POINTS: Towson exploded for 86 points in their last contest at Minnesota. It was the second time under Head coach
Niki Reid Geckeler that the team scored 80 or more points in a game. It was the most points scored by a Towson team since the 2003-04 squad scored 92 in a win over UMES. It also marked the first time since 2006-07 that the Tigers had two games in the same season with 80 or more points scored.
UP NEXT: Towson returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 23 as the Tigers travel to Georgetown for a 12 p.m. start. Towson Sports Network's
Ben Rosenbaum and
Ian Jett will have the call as Head Coach
Niki Reid Geckeler makes her first return to her alma mater as a visitor.
