DURHAM, N.H. – The Towson University women's gymnastics team finished third in a quad meet on Sunday afternoon, hosted by the University of New Hampshire. The host Wildcats finished first with a total of 196.525 while West Virginia finished in second-place (195.300). The Tigers recorded 194.975 points while Brown finished the meet with 193.475.
"There was a really good crowd that that got the atmopshere and energy levels up," Head Coach
Vicki Chliszczyk said. "We didn't count a fall again tonight so that was good for us.
"One of the things that we felt like we haven't done well lately is warmup strong and we did that better today, especially on the first two events."
Tyra McKellar started things off for the Tigers on bars where she recorded a 9.900. Her score was a new career-high and led the Tiger effort in the event. Towson finished the event with a team total of 48.825.
Vicki Vesecky recorded a 9.750 while
Samantha Lutz and
Lydia Thompson earned matching 9.725 scores.
The Tigers moved next to beam where they finished the event with a total of 48.550.
Lauren Cahalan and
Janis Konkle both recorded team-high 9.725 scores. The rest of the Tiger squad hovered around a 9.700 score in the event.
Towson was most successful on the floor as all of the Tigers earned scores of 9.800 or higher. McKellar tied for third overall in the event and set a career-high after recording another 9.900 for the day. Four other Tigers recorded career-highs with Cahalan and
Nicolette Vignola earning matching 9.850 scores.
Noelle Harada and Lutz both finished with a career-high 9.800.
The Tigers wrapped up the meet on vault where they totaled 48.375 points.
Katie Sassa led the Towson effort with a 9.825 score while McKellar (9.725) was the only other Tiger to score higher than 9.7. Cahalan earned her second career-high of the meet after she finished with a 9.625 on vault.
McKellar finished third in the all-around with a career-high 39.175 total.
Towson will return home on Saturday, Feb. 14 to welcome Pennsylvania at 4 p.m. for the Shelli Calloway Memorial Invitational. The meet will serve as "Alumni Night" for the Tigers and fans are encouraged to wear their favorite Towson shirts to help welcome back alumni.
